Gil’s Realm
Gil Bruvel’s work opens the realms of imaginative experience, deep personal mythology, exploration and visions to create a link between the conscious and the unconscious in an attempt to get closer to the mystery of the transformative process—what is engendered by growth and metamorphosis in the world of human experience. His canvases merge physical and organic forms to produce an amalgamation that is part human, part idea, part consciousness, and part spirit.

Quote of the Month
All colours will agree in the dark.

Francis Bacon (1909-1992)

For Gil, Bacon represents the human body in a radical way, an emotional way. Gil feels Bacon's work lends itself to the intrinsic nature of the human body and psyche, albeit with a dramatic and gripping and disturbing, but truthful, twist.

This month we feature the first of a two part newsletter on Gil’s use of color.  We hope you enjoy this odyssey of texture and light.

A World of Color - Part 1

According to Gil Bruvel, “colors are more like vibrations.” He traces this idea to the work of 19th century physicist Michel-Eugene Chevreul, whose Law of Simultaneous Contrast explains optical response to vibrant color. According to Chevreul, an optical sensation is produced when intense hues are juxtaposed, resulting in a “halo” of complementary color.

“The Horizon” - 2008
Oil on Canvas,
40” x 40”

“Self Portrait Beneath the Tree” - 2009
Mixed Media on Board, 24” x 24”

“Planetscape, The Seed” - 2008
Oil on Board, 18” x 18”

“Tightrope Walker” – 1990
Gouache & Graphite on Board, 38” x 32”
This complementary “glow” quite literally invades the other colors on the canvas so that the weaker colors actually appear changed.

And this canvas creates an illusion of volume, space, light and movement, but also reflects a specific emotional world.

“Intuition” - 2007
Oil on Board, 20" x 16"

Gil says his colors “only make sense in correlation with what [he’s] trying to express in combination with other colors” and “it is exactly the same on an emotional level.”

In other words, Gil’s colors emanate from an emotional world: They resonate a kind of experience and seeing articulated by an individual portrait or perception.

To be continued...
