Gil's Realm - 7/22/08

Gil’s Realm

Gil Bruvel’s work opens the realms of imaginative experience, deep personal mythology, exploration and visions to create a link between the conscious and the unconscious in an attempt to get closer to the mystery of the transformative process—what is engendered by growth and metamorphosis in the world of human experience. His canvases merge physical and organic forms to produce an amalgamation that is part human, part idea, part consciousness, and part spirit.

Quote of the Month

“Iron rusts from disuse, stagnant water loses its purity, and in cold, weather becomes frozen; even so does inaction sap the vigors of the mind.”

Leonardo Da Vinci

Taking the idea that landscapes so often transform in the physical, emotional, psychological and physical world, Gil wanted to concentrate on how figures and motifs in his oil paintings would shift and grow when they were transformed into sculpture and functional art. The result is Transcapes: An Exploration of Form, a solo exhibition featuring Functional Art, ranging from mixed media hand-crafted chess sets to unique furniture in bronze and wood, as well as Sculpture (bronze, stainless steel & mixed media), and Painting (oil & mixed media).

Functional Art: Alter Ego
Gil cites his own intellectual curiosity and interest in “plumbing the world of ideas” as inspiration for not only the work itself, but its natural variety of forms. To this end, he says his studies of philosophy, psychology, anthropology, ancient cultures, mythology, and literature ground his creative process and provide inspiration for his subject matter. “As a thinker,” he says, “I have always has been a seeker. I work to uncover the mystery of the transformative process, what is engendered by growth and metamorphosis in the world of human experience, both conscious and unconscious.”

Transcapes will exhibit at The Cedars Art Gallery at 1114 S. Akard St in the historic Newlands Hotel in Dallas, TX from September 20th to October 20th, 2008, with an opening reception scheduled for September 20th from 6:30 – 9:30pm.  The reception is open to the public.  Valet parking will be provided.

The Mechanical & Industrial World
 – vs –
The Natural & Organic World

One of Gil’s functional art pieces, this magnificent chess set elegantly pits the Industrial/Mechanical World against the Natural/Organic World in a visual style that is equally whimsical and thought-provoking.  The set promises to evoke reverie about the world we live in and other imaginative possibilities.

This set will not only be an excellent compliment to any collection, its worth in enhanced by the addition of features that make each number of the edition unique.

Gil hand-makes and paints each board in distinct colors, including two discrete drawings per board.  Thus, each exclusive board displays original art by Gil:  No two boards are the same.

Further, each set is as formidable as it is unique. The chess board (36.5”  x 36.5” including corners) weighs 92 lbs, almost equal to the total weight of the 32 individual original Bruvel stainless steel/bronze sculptural pieces that make up the set. Each sculptural player piece, along with the board corners, has been hand patina’ed by Gil. The Queen, the tallest piece, stands at just over 10 inches.

Each Bruvellian Chess Set arrives with a tempered glass top which will help preserve the board when used for play.

* The Chess Set is offered as an Edition of 20 + 2 Artist Proofs and is exceptionally priced at $42,000.  Currently, only 3 editions remain.

*The Enhanced Board, a version in which the playing board borders (the area outside of the checkered pattern) are hand drawn in graphite by Gil, is offered at $65,000. This version resembles the 2 Artist Proof Editions which have sold out.

 * Cost of crating & shipping is quoted upon acquisition.  Delivery time is approximately 1 month.
