Gil’s Realm

Gil Bruvel’s work opens the realms of imaginative experience, deep personal mythology, exploration and visions to create a link between the conscious and the unconscious in an attempt to get closer to the mystery of the transformative process—what is engendered by growth and metamorphosis in the world of human experience. His canvases merge physical and organic forms to produce an amalgamation that is part human, part idea, part consciousness, and part spirit.

Just in time for spring!--and the explosion of color it brings---this newsletter features part two of Gil’s use of color. In thinking about texture and light, Gil wanted to acknowledge the work of Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) which “dissects a whole color spectrum out of ‘white’ light, and executes near-perfect optical precision to reproduce the most minute detail.” Vermeer provides a visual influence for Gil and is this month’s featured artist.

A World of Color - Part 2

Color, according to Gil Bruvel, “is a way of observing the world.” In art, as in life, he says, attentiveness is important. Color reflects not only moods and tones, but is “a presence, one that evokes memory or a feeling, or even a sensation.”

“Portrait of Cameron” - 2006
Oil on Board, 24” x 18”

“The Annunciation” – 2004
Oil on Canvas, 35” x 30”

In this way, Gil’s canvases are meant to resonate uniquely with each viewer. “They take you on a personal journey to a place where, through color and archetype, something ancient is touched,” says Gil.

“The Encounter” - 1987
Oil on Canvas, 23” x 29”

“Multiple” - 2003
Oil on Canvas, 24” x 29 7/8”

“The Four Meanings of Two, The Encounter”
2003 Oil on Canvas, 42” x 48”

Like Vermeer, Gil pays attention to light and the vibrancy of the natural world, but his use of color is fluid and intuitive. Thus, he doesn’t feel the need to use specific colors to represent specific things. His motifs are much more fluid and his process is much more instinctive and spontaneous. He says playfully, “colors are like flowers: they’re pretty,” but is also quick to point out that color forms its own pattern and has its own logic, “like nature.” “Everything,” says Gil, “is a metaphor for nature.” Explaining, Gil says, color is “the imprint”: it reflects an “openness of mind” that allows us to tap back into an archetype where we were never separated from shapes or colors. “It’s a very holistic experience,” he says, “and that is the way things exist in nature.”

Going back to the idea of color as a way of observing the world, Gil says, “You want to pay attention to the echo.” Again invoking the role of intuition and the subconscious in art, Gils says that how the work affects us on the level of impression is very important. “This is why color is so important. Something is my mind--an impression, emotion, sensation--coupled with observation, makes a piece that in turn resonates with an impression, emotion or sensation in the viewer. That’s the echo and that’s what art does.”
