Columns and Door Handles
Gil has created the design for 14 columns that will surround the indoor pool of the Houston home. He fashioned the 3-D design of the fanciful 11-foot columns with his computer in a process similar to the one he used to create the exterior stonework for the house. Once again, a sophisticated milling machine has carved the grand model out of high-density foam. A mold will then be made of the foam model and, finally, cast in resin. Thereafter, the columns will be installed and painted with a faux finish.
Again, Gil's experience at the Restoration Workshop came into play. "I feel the columns reflect my personal style and experiences, but it was easy to integrate them into the environment because I can understand the style of the whole house. I understand the environment in which a work was created," he said.
Stereo lithography, however, is being used to create the models for which 120 door handles and back plates will be cast for the home. Also a rapid prototyping process, stereo lithography differs from a milling machine by using layers of thermal resin to build up a model instead of carving it out of foam. The process is comparable to the layering of a geological map and allows for much greater detail than the foam models. After the resin models are completed, molds will be made, and the stunning door handles and back plates will be cast in stainless steel. Gil has designed two styles of door handles--one depicting an exquisitely rendered female nude figure and another featuring a restful childlike figure encased in a pod. The handles will be installed on all the doors of the upper and lower floors, causing one to pause before entering each room filled with yet more Bruvellian delights.
